Foundation Laying Analogy

Anyone who has ever been responsible for any form of building construction knows how critically important the foundation of the structure they are building is. Whether one is building a sky scraper, a bridge, a road or house, the greatest amount of preparation, planning, diligence and exacting oversight goes into the laying of the foundations. The bigger the structure the more important the diligence, planning and work put into the foundation! It’s simple, if your foundations are faulty whatever you build on it will be at risk, and the bigger the structure the bigger the failure will be (Luke 6:46-49)! The laying of personal foundations with God and with each other is also critically important to any building, structure or network we might create. In fact relational foundations are as important as the laying of foundations of the building or sky scraper. It takes much preparation, care, diligence and purposeful oversight to steward healthy and mutually beneficial relationships that should be win/win by design and thus bring glory to our God.

These relationships must be laid on the truth of God’s word and the following obedience (doing) of his commandments, thus digging deep, reaching, and laying our foundations on the ROCK who is Christ, the chief cornerstone! This ‘digging deep’ is not exactly an easy task and is in fact impossible apart from the abundant and available grace of God. Indeed, need for His grace is clearly stated in the above Scripture in Luke, where Jesus tells us not only that it would be wise to come, hear and then obey, but absolutely expedient that we do so. Otherwise anything we do, any structure we build without this ‘sure foundation’ on the rock of relationship with God and charity of heart towards each other will fail. The destruction and loss of everything that was built hurriedly on the sand will be great!
